Defending Homeownership: My Commitment to Keeping Housing Affordable in Hamilton

As a dedicated realtor deeply invested in the Hamilton community, I recently joined forces with many of my colleagues to oppose the proposed Municipal Land Transfer Tax (MLTT). This initiative was not just a professional obligation but a personal mission to protect the dream of homeownership for our residents.

A United Stand Against the MLTT

Understanding the significant financial strain an additional land transfer tax would impose, I actively participated in signing petitions & advocating against this proposal. Collaborating with the Cornerstone Association of REALTORS® (CAR), we launched a comprehensive campaign to inform both the public & city officials about the potential negative impacts of the MLTT. Our efforts included sharing informative posts across social media platforms & commissioning a poll through Abacus Data, which revealed that 74% of Hamiltonians believed the MLTT would further hinder housing affordability.

Engaging the Community

Beyond digital advocacy, I engaged directly with community members to discuss the implications of the proposed tax. These conversations reinforced my belief in the importance of accessibility & the need to alleviate, not exacerbate, financial burdens for homeowners. The overwhelming support from residents, many of whom filled the City Hall gallery during the council meeting, highlighted our collective commitment to maintaining affordable housing in Hamilton.

Reflecting on Our Success

The decision by the City Council to halt the MLTT proposal was a significant victory for all of us who value homeownership as a cornerstone of our community. This experience has deepened my dedication to advocating for policies that prioritize the well-being of Hamilton’s residents. Together, we’ve demonstrated the power of unity in safeguarding the interests of our community.

As I near my 10th anniversary as a dedicated Realtor®, I’m truly grateful for the trust my clients have placed in me & I look forward to continuing to serve their needs & support their goals for many years to come.
